HUMBLE BEGINNINGS (1934)
The Larimar Group’s story began in 1934, when Gaetano Carleo, of Italian descent, launched a one-man, one-bus service between Alexandra Township and Johannesburg. This modest venture laid the foundation for what would become a major force in South Africa’s passenger transport industry.
EXPANSION INTO INDUSTRY (1965)
As the business grew, Carleo partnered with other bus operators while pursuing opportunities in the industrial sector. In 1965, he exited the bus business to focus on developing Africa Body & Coach, marking the start of Larimar’s footprint in manufacturing and engineering.
ACQUISITION OF PUTCO (1970–1971)
In 1970, Carleo Enterprises was established with the vision of acquiring Putco, a goal realized the following year. This milestone secured a strong presence in both the public transport and industrial sectors. Under Larimar’s stewardship, Putco expanded across Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban, becoming a household name in passenger transport.
COMMUNITY IMPACT (1982)
With growth came responsibility. In 1982, the Putco Foundation was founded to uplift communities affected by poverty and unemployment. Over the years, it has provided education and opportunities, producing graduates in fields such as medicine and engineering.
TRANSFORMATION & EMPOWERMENT (1990S–2000S)
As South Africa entered democracy, Putco embraced transformation and BBBEE. After more than 60 years on the JSE, the company delisted to transfer 42.6% ownership to employees, women’s groups, youth, people with disabilities, and community organizations a landmark empowerment achievement the Group remains proud of.
